The BRE (Buildings Research Establishment) provides comprehensive information about the sustainable credentials of building materials.

" building materials and components are assessed in terms of their environmental impact across their entire life cycle - from ‘cradle to grave' "

The current edition of the Green Guide to Specification is available on line, after registering, or a printed copy is available to buy.
Constructions are given an overall rating on a range of measures. The drawback is that individual materials are not rated separately, only as part of an overall construction. An external wall, for example, will include the paint and plaster as well as the masonry and insulation.
It is not possible therefore to assess a construction if it is different from those already assessed.
