Bamboo

Bamboo

There is a great deal to be said about, and for, bamboo.
Its sustainable credentials are impressive - mostly deriving from its very rapid rate of growth in the right climate.
The range of items that can be made from bamboo is astonishing - from eating implements to musical instruments; from hats to mats.
In the UK we are most likely to be familiar with bamboo in the form of garden canes, and we have most likely been struck by how strong and light they are.
What is particularly unusual about bamboo is that it's strength to weight ratio remains even as the size (diameter) of the bamboo increases.
It can, and is used for the main structure of quite substantial buildings.

At 'Bamboozle', at Porthleven in Cornwall in 2007, we built several structures from bamboo.

Joining bamboo poles is the most critical part of the structure.

Merely using rope or twine is unlikely to impress the Building Inspector, but using cardboard tubes, Shigeru Ban has designed several buildings around the world.

His work with bamboo has used laminated bamboo strips rather than poles.

Shigeru Ban is very famous Japanese architect. Especially he has been taken an active part in Hisaichi (in Tohoku area).
How did you know him?

As you say, he is famous architect, and he has done very interesting work, particularly his "paper" constructions.
